GMAT Critical Reasoning has three official types, set by GMAC. Type 1 asks you to attack or improve an argument and covers more than 75% of Critical Reasoning questions. Type 2 asks you to describe how the argument's reasoning works, mostly through boldface questions. Type 3 asks you to supply a conclusion the stimulus supports, through inference questions. Inference answers must follow directly from stated facts, not add extra support. Paradox and Resolve questions sit inside Type 1 alongside strengthen and weaken, but give you two facts to reconcile instead of one gap to close. Boldface questions name the job each bolded sentence does inside the argument. GMAC does not publish percentage shares for Types 2 and 3.
Critical Reasoning questions share the Verbal Reasoning section with Reading Comprehension: 23 questions in 45 minutes, per mba.com's exam structure page. The full GMAT runs 2 hours 15 minutes, with one optional 10-minute break. Verbal Reasoning measures your ability to make arguments, evaluate arguments, and formulate or evaluate a plan of action, according to mba.com's exam content page. GMAC's Official Critical Reasoning Taxonomy
GMAC splits Critical Reasoning into three broad categories, according to mba.com's guide to Critical Reasoning. Type 1 asks you to attack or improve a flaw in the argument. Type 2 asks you to analyze or describe the line of reasoning. Type 3 asks you to supply a valid conclusion from the stimulus.

How Inference, Paradox and Boldface Differ from the Assumption Family
The four types in our Assumption family guide, Assumption, Strengthen, Weaken and Evaluate, share one job: find the gap between an argument's premises and its conclusion, then add support, remove support, or name the missing link. Inference, Paradox and Resolve, and Boldface questions ask for something else. Each one changes what you look for on the first read, so the gap-hunting habit works against you.
Inference: No Argument to Evaluate
An inference question gives you a set of stated facts and asks which answer choice must be true based on those facts alone. There is no conclusion to strengthen or weaken, and no assumption to name. The correct answer restates or combines the given facts. It does not add new support the way a strengthen answer does.
Paradox and Resolve: Two Facts, Not One Gap
GMAC officially files explain-the-paradox questions inside Type 1, alongside strengthen, weaken and assumption. But the reading approach differs from the other three. A strengthen or weaken question gives you one argument with a conclusion to defend or attack. A paradox question gives you two facts which appear to conflict, with no conclusion at all. The correct answer explains how both facts hold true at once.
Boldface: Describe, Do Not Argue
A boldface question does not ask you to agree or disagree with the argument. It asks you to name the job each bolded sentence does inside it, such as stating the main conclusion, offering a premise, or raising an objection the author then answers. You are describing structure, not judging whether the argument holds up.
Inference Questions: Must-Be-True, Not Best-Supported
What Counts as a Valid Inference
GMAC defines Type 3 questions as those in which you must supply a valid conclusion based on the information given in the stimulus, commonly called inference or conclusion questions, per mba.com. The correct answer follows from the stated facts alone. You do not need outside knowledge, and you do not need to accept an assumption the stimulus never states. Treat the stimulus as a closed set of evidence. If an answer choice needs one more fact to be true, it fails.
The Strengthen-Style Trap
The most common wrong answer on an inference question reads like a strengthen answer. It makes an argument's conclusion more likely, but it is not proven by the stimulus alone. Test each answer choice against one standard: it must be stated directly by the stimulus, or built by combining two stated facts. If it needs an added assumption to work, it belongs on a strengthen question, not an inference question.
Consider this original stimulus: a company's sales team closed 40% of leads which came through referrals last quarter, compared with 15% of leads which came through cold outreach. The sales team handled twice as many cold-outreach leads as referral leads. Nothing in the stimulus states a conclusion, so treat every sentence as evidence.
One answer choice reads: referral leads closed at a higher rate than cold-outreach leads last quarter. This follows directly from the stated percentages, so it counts as a valid inference. A second answer choice reads: the sales team should shift its budget toward referral generation. This is not proven by the stated facts alone, and it reads like a strengthen or recommendation answer.
Paradox and Resolve Questions: Reconciling Two Facts
Approach: Find the Two Facts, Then Close the Gap
Work through paradox questions in a fixed order.
- Identify the two facts the stimulus presents as surprising when read together.
- Check each answer choice against both facts, not one.
- Eliminate any choice which resolves the surprise by contradicting a stated fact.
- Pick the choice which lets both facts stand true at the same time.
Common Wrong-Answer Patterns
A small set of patterns account for most wrong answers on paradox questions.

Consider this original stimulus: a city's downtown parking garage cut its hourly rate by 30% last year, yet the garage's monthly revenue rose during the same period. The two facts sit in tension, since a lower price per hour points toward lower revenue. Your job is to find the answer choice letting both facts stand.
One answer choice reads: the rate cut drew enough new customers to raise total hours purchased by more than 30%. This holds both facts true at once, because volume rose more than the price fell. A wrong answer choice reads: the garage's rate was never reduced, due to a fee added at checkout which offset the posted rate cut. This contradicts the stated rate cut instead of reconciling it with the revenue increase.
Boldface Questions: Identifying the Role of Bolded Statements
GMAC's Method of Reasoning Label
GMAC labels Type 2 questions method of reasoning questions, and notes these are usually boldfaced questions, per mba.com. A boldface stimulus bolds two sentences inside a longer argument, then asks you to pick the answer choice describing what each bolded sentence does inside the argument's structure. GMAC publishes no percentage share for Type 2, so no official count exists for how many of these appear on a given exam.
Approach: Map the Argument First
Read the stimulus once and label every sentence before you look at the answer choices. Mark each one as the main conclusion, a premise supporting it, an opposing view the author raises, or the author's response to this opposing view. Once you have labeled both bolded sentences, match your labels against the answer choices instead of rereading the stimulus for each option.
Consider this original stimulus, with two sentences in bold: some critics argue the new zoning law will raise housing costs across the city. Bold 1: housing costs rose in three neighborhoods after a similar law passed in a nearby city. But citywide housing supply grew by 12% in the two years after the law passed, easing the pressure prices would otherwise have faced. Bold 2: the new zoning law is unlikely to raise housing costs citywide.
The first bolded sentence offers evidence supporting the critics' view, which the argument goes on to challenge. The second bolded sentence states the argument's main conclusion, reached after the author adds the supply data. The correct answer choice names both roles: the first is evidence for an opposing view, and the second is the main conclusion the author draws.
Argument Mapping: One Read-Through for All Three Types
Label Every Sentence Before You Look at the Choices
Read the stimulus once, and label each sentence with one job: a stated fact, a premise, a conclusion, an opposing view, or a response to it. This single read-through works for all three question types in this guide, since none of them reward jumping straight to the answer choices. Labels built before you read the choices keep a tempting wrong answer from rewriting your reading of the stimulus.
Match the Question Stem to the Right Job
The question stem tells you which map to build before you read the stimulus in full.

A must-be-true stem means you are hunting for stated facts. A discrepancy stem means you are hunting for two facts in tension. A boldface stem means you are hunting for structural roles, not for a position to defend or attack.
Sample Question Walkthroughs
Inference Example
Stimulus: a school district's average class size dropped from 28 to 24 students over five years, while its standardized test scores rose in the same period. Question: which of the following must be true based on the statements above? Correct answer: the district's average class size in year five was lower than in year one. This restates the stated numbers directly. A tempting wrong answer, smaller class sizes caused the rise in test scores, fails the must-be-true test, since the stimulus reports two trends together, not a proven cause.
Paradox and Resolve Example
Stimulus: an airline added 20 new routes last year, yet its on-time arrival rate improved during the same period. Question: which of the following, if true, best explains this apparent discrepancy? Correct answer: the new routes used airports with less congested runways than the airline's existing routes. This lets both facts stand. More routes, and a better on-time rate, because the added routes carried less delay risk than the average existing route.
Boldface Example
Stimulus, two sentences in bold: a company's marketing director proposes doubling the ad budget for the coming quarter, citing last quarter's 18% sales increase. Bold 1: last quarter's increase followed a one-time product launch, an event unlikely to repeat this quarter. Bold 2: the company should hold its ad budget steady instead of doubling it. Question: the two bolded portions play which of the following roles?
Correct answer: the first is a fact used to argue against the director's proposal, and the second is the argument's main conclusion. Wrong answers which label the first bolded sentence as the director's own evidence fail, since it comes from the author countering the director, not the director's own claim. The bold text belongs to the author's response, and the director's own support is the 18% figure in the opening sentence.
