How does the IELTS band score work?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures English proficiency across four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — each scored on a 0–9 band scale. Your overall band is simply the average of those four sections, rounded to the nearest half band, so no single skill is weighted more heavily than another.

How is the overall IELTS band calculated?

Add your four section bands together, divide by four, and round to the nearest 0.5. If the average ends in .25 it rounds up to the next half band; if it ends in .75 it rounds up to the next whole band. For example, an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, while 6.5 stays 6.5.

For Listening and Reading, enter your raw correct answers out of 40 and the calculator converts them to a band using indicative British Council / IDP conversion tables. Listening uses the same table for both modules, while Reading uses a separate table for Academic and General Training. Writing and Speaking are graded directly as bands by examiners, so you enter those as-is.

What does each IELTS band mean?

Bands describe how effectively a candidate uses English. Most universities ask for an overall 6.0–7.0, often with a minimum in each individual section.

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?

Academic is for higher-education admissions and professional registration, testing whether you can study or train in English at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

General Training is for migration, work experience, and secondary education, focusing on everyday survival skills in social and workplace contexts. Listening and Speaking are the same for both; only the Reading passages and conversion table differ.

What IELTS band do universities require?

Most programmes ask for an overall band between 6.0 and 7.0, with top-tier US universities expecting 7.0–7.5+. Aim for the upper end of a programme’s range, and check whether it also sets a minimum for each individual section.

How should I prepare for the IELTS?

1. Take official full-length practice tests to get used to the timing and layout of each section.
2. Analyse your mistakes — understand why each answer is right or wrong rather than only checking your score.
3. Build vocabulary and grammar, using a wider range of accurate words, spellings, and sentence structures.
4. Practise strict time management so you can finish every section within its limit.
5. Record yourself speaking to improve fluency, pronunciation, and coherence.
6. Learn the Writing task types — interpreting charts for Academic Task 1 and structuring formal essays for Task 2.
