What is the TOEFL iBT?

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT is a standardized English proficiency test accepted for university admission and professional certification worldwide. It measures your ability to use and understand English in academic contexts, takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes, and assesses four skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

How is the TOEFL total score calculated?

Your total TOEFL iBT score is simply the sum of your four section scores. Each section is scored from 0 to 30, so the total ranges from 0 to 120. There is no weighting and no penalty for wrong answers — Reading + Listening + Speaking + Writing gives your total.

What are the four TOEFL sections?

Reading (0–30) presents 3–4 academic passages with 30–40 comprehension questions.

Listening (0–30) covers lectures and conversations, testing your grasp of main ideas, detail, and speaker attitude.

Speaking (0–30) has four tasks, evaluated by both human raters and AI, that combine independent and integrated responses.

Writing (0–30) includes an integrated task and an independent (or writing-for-an-academic-discussion) task.

How should I prepare for the TOEFL?

  1. Take official ETS practice tests to get used to the format and timing of each section.
  2. Focus on academic English — the test measures comprehension and use in academic settings.
  3. Practice integrated tasks, where speaking and writing combine reading and listening with output skills.
  4. Sharpen your note-taking; you can take notes during the listening and speaking sections.
  5. Build academic vocabulary, phrasal verbs, and word families, then track your scores over time.
