ETS splits its major data across two publications: a seven-field summary table inside Interpreting Your GRE Scores, which carries no Computer Science row, and a detailed major-by-major table, Table 4B, which does. The two rest on different reporting cycles and different reference groups, so this guide labels each figure rather than blending them. No official count exists of programs still requiring the GRE, so read the admissions page published by the program you are applying to.
How CS and Engineering Programs Weigh Your GRE Score
ETS gives programs no field-specific formula for weighing your three GRE scores. ETS's guidance for institutions calls for scores to be considered in relation to other components in an applicant's file, as part of a full holistic review, rather than one weighting formula applied by field. In practice, CS and engineering departments look closely at your Quantitative Reasoning score because it maps onto the math and problem-solving demands of the program. Your Verbal Reasoning and Analytical Writing scores still count, especially if the program expects you to publish, present or teach.
Published Average Scores by Intended Major
ETS breaks down average scores by the graduate major test takers report when they register for the exam. Table 4B carries an explicit Computer Science row: a Verbal mean of 150, a Quantitative mean of 161 and an Analytical Writing mean of 3.4, across roughly 80,000 test takers. Those figures come from the older July 2018 to June 2021 reporting cycle, published under a 2022 copyright, so treat them as a dated but CS-specific benchmark.
The seven broad fields listed in Table 2 of Interpreting Your GRE Scores are a different cut of the data. Table 2 carries no Computer Science row, and there Engineering posts a Quantitative mean of 160 while the wider Physical Sciences group posts 162, both drawn from the July 2022 to June 2025 cycle. Table 4A places Computer and Information Sciences under the Physical Sciences heading, and in its July 2018 to June 2021 data the subgroup counts sum exactly to the 139,311 Physical Sciences total, which is why a CS applicant sits inside the broader group when only the seven-field cut is available.

Quant is the measure separating both groups from the general test-taking pool, while their Verbal and Analytical Writing means land near the middle of the scale. Avoid reading the gap between these means and the all-test-taker figures as a clean two-point edge. The Table 2 major means are based on the performance of seniors and nonenrolled college graduates, while the all-test-taker Quant mean of 157.62 sits in Table 1 and is based on all test takers. Different reference groups, so the difference between them is not a like-for-like comparison.
What Counts as a Competitive Quantitative Score
A percentile rank tells you what share of test takers scored lower than you. It does not track the 130 to 170 scale in a straight line, so equal score gains buy different percentile jumps at different points. A five-point gain near the top of the Quant scale moves you further than the same gain in the middle: 155 to 160 is worth 13 percentile points, while 165 to 170 is worth 22. ETS reports the following Quant percentile ranks for the 2026-27 reporting cycle, covering test takers from July 2022 through June 2025:

These ranks describe the full pool of test takers, so use them to place your own score rather than to score the group means above. A 160 sits at the 50th percentile, a 163 reaches the 60th and a 167 reaches the 75th. Each point above 165 carries more percentile weight than a point near the middle of the scale, so late prep work pays off most once you are already scoring high.
Quant Percentiles Run Lower Than Verbal at the Same Score
A 160 on Verbal Reasoning reaches the 82nd percentile, a 165 reaches the 95th percentile and a 170 reaches the 99th percentile, well above the standing a matching Quant score earns. The Quant test-taking pool skews stronger overall, so the same scaled score buys you a lower percentile rank on Quant than on Verbal. Do not compare a Quant score directly against a Verbal score on the same numeric scale.

GRE Requirements: Required at Some Programs, Optional at Others
No official aggregate figure shows how many CS and engineering graduate programs still require the GRE versus how many have gone test-optional or dropped it. Requirements vary by program and change between admissions cycles. Treat any secondhand list of GRE-free programs as out of date, and read the admissions requirements page published by each program before you plan your testing calendar.
ETS's own guidance frames the choice on a test-optional application plainly: submitting a score is up to you, not a requirement. ETS advises test takers who earn a strong score to submit it, since doing so gives you a meaningful advantage over applicants who submit nothing at all. A weak score works against you in the same setting, so weigh your actual result against the published means and percentile ranks above before deciding.

Funding and Teaching Assistantship Decisions
Many CS and engineering departments fund admitted students through teaching or research assistantships, and applicants often ask whether a Quant score threshold controls these awards. No official or aggregate source documents a general policy tying funding or TA-ship decisions to a specific GRE Quant score. Funding decisions are made at the department level, using criteria each program sets on its own. Contact the graduate coordinator or funding office at each program directly to learn how the department connects test scores, if at all, to funding decisions.
