TL;DR

SAT Math is 44 questions in 70 minutes: two modules of 22 questions, 35 minutes each. Forty questions are scored and four are unscored pretest items. The average pace is 1.59 minutes per question. About 75 percent of questions are four-option multiple choice and 25 percent are student-produced response. Bluebook gives you a built-in Desmos calculator on every Math question. The section score runs 200 to 800.

Digital SAT Math runs 70 minutes and asks 44 questions, delivered as two 35-minute modules of 22 questions each, per the College Board assessment framework for the digital SAT Suite. Forty of the 44 questions are operational and produce your score. The other four are unscored pretest questions seeded into the modules with nothing marking them, so answer all 44 with the same effort.

The section adapts between modules. Module 1 mixes difficulty levels and routes you into one of two versions of Module 2. Content comes from four domains, and Algebra plus Advanced Math together take about 70 percent of the scored questions. This guide covers the module structure, the domain weights, the two answer formats, the calculator policy and the drills matched to each skill.

Section Structure and Timing

These numbers are fixed for every administration of the digital SAT Math section, set out in the assessment framework:

Each module carries 20 operational questions and 2 pretest questions. Nothing on screen separates the two kinds, so a strange-looking question still deserves your best answer.

How the Two Modules Work

Math uses a two-stage multistage adaptive design. Module 1 is the routing stage and holds a mix of easy, medium and hard questions. Your performance on Module 1 sets the average difficulty of the Module 2 form you receive, as the framework describes.

The modules are timed separately. Time left over at the end of Module 1 does not roll into Module 2, and returning to Module 1 after advancing is not allowed. Everything you want to review has to be reviewed inside the module you are working in.

The routing has one practical consequence. Module 1 sets the difficulty of the questions you see next, so the first 22 questions deserve your steadiest and most careful work.

Pacing Inside a Module

College Board puts the average at 1.59 minutes per question. The figure holds inside a single module too, since 35 minutes divided by 22 questions gives the same pace. Real questions do not consume equal time, so work to checkpoints instead of watching the clock on every question.

Five questions per eight minutes tracks the average, so the last two questions still need about 90 seconds each. When a question passes two minutes with no path forward, enter your best answer and move on. Run the same checkpoints in Module 2, because the length and the clock are identical.

The Four Content Domains

Every operational Math question belongs to one of four content domains. The framework fixes both the share of the section and the question count for each domain on the SAT:

These weights come from Table 16 of the assessment framework and apply to the SAT itself. The weighting sets your study order. Algebra and Advanced Math hold 26 to 30 of the 40 scored questions between them, so a gap in either domain costs several times more than a gap in Geometry and Trigonometry.

Algebra

Algebra covers linear relationships in one and two variables. It ties with Advanced Math as the largest domain at about 35 percent of the section, 13 to 15 scored questions.

Most Algebra questions resolve in a few steps once the equation is written down. Finishing them under the 1.59-minute average leaves extra time for the longer Advanced Math questions.

Advanced Math

Advanced Math covers nonlinear relationships. It matches Algebra in weight at about 35 percent of the section, 13 to 15 scored questions.

This domain produces the longest solution paths in the section. It is also where the built-in graphing calculator saves the most time, because a graphed equation often answers the question faster than algebra by hand.

Problem-Solving and Data Analysis

This domain covers proportional reasoning, data displays and statistics. It is about 15 percent of the section, 5 to 7 scored questions.

Questions here carry the heaviest reading load in the section. Read the axis labels, the table headers and the units before touching any numbers.

Geometry and Trigonometry

Geometry and Trigonometry closes the set at about 15 percent of the section, 5 to 7 scored questions.

One note for younger students: the same four-domain structure covers the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10, while PSAT 8/9 uses a Geometry domain with no trigonometry.

Question Formats

Two answer formats appear across both modules, and the split between them is set by the framework:

The counts above come from Table 19 of the assessment framework. Both formats appear across the domains, so a student-produced response question is as likely to be geometry as algebra.

Student-Produced Response Questions

Student-produced response questions show no answer choices. You type your own answer into an entry field. Two shortcuts disappear along with the options: elimination and back-solving. The work has to be finished on paper or on the calculator.

Three habits protect these 8 to 12 questions:

  • Reread the question before entering. A solved value for x is worthless when the question asks for 2x.
  • Check the units. Context questions often set up the problem in one unit and ask for the answer in another.
  • Enter something in every field. An empty field earns nothing, and a considered estimate takes ten seconds.

Context-Based Questions

About 30 percent of Math questions, 10 to 14 of the 40 scored ones, are set in a science, social studies or real-world context, according to the framework. The mathematics is identical to the abstract versions. The extra step is translation.

Work these in a fixed order: read the scenario once, name what each variable stands for, write the relationship as an equation, then solve. Writing the variable definitions down takes a few seconds and prevents the most common error, which is answering a different question from the one asked.

Calculator Policy

A calculator is allowed on every Math question. The digital SAT has no separate no-calculator section, and the Bluebook testing app includes a built-in Desmos calculator on all Math questions. No calculator is permitted on Reading and Writing.

The Built-In Desmos Calculator

The embedded calculator toggles between graphing and scientific modes, both inside Bluebook. Graphing mode changes how several question types are solved: enter both sides of an equation and read the intersection, enter a system and read the crossing point, or graph a quadratic and read its vertex and zeros off the curve.

The tool only pays off with practice. Learn the entry syntax and the mode toggle in advance, because learning them inside a 35-minute module costs questions.

Bringing Your Own Calculator

An approved handheld calculator is allowed as an alternative to the built-in one. College Board sets these conditions:

  • Non-CAS models only. Calculators with a computer algebra system are prohibited.
  • Battery-operated and silent.
  • No QWERTY keyboard.
  • No internet, Bluetooth or cellular capability.
  • No tablets, phones or laptops.
  • No sharing with another test taker.

If your own calculator fails and you brought no backup, you are allowed to continue with the built-in Desmos calculator. Bring a handheld only when its muscle memory is worth more to you than the graphing power on screen.

Calculators You Are Not Allowed to Bring

The prohibited list is built around computer algebra system capability. Named examples include:

  • Casio ClassPad series
  • Texas Instruments TI-Nspire CAS, TI-89 and TI-92
  • Hewlett-Packard 40G, 49G and 50G series

Model lists change. Check the official calculator policy page in the week before your test date and confirm your exact model number, not the family name.

How the Math Score Works

The Math section score runs from 200 to 800 in 10-point intervals. Adding it to the Reading and Writing section score gives the 400 to 1600 total, as the framework defines the scale. Only the 40 operational questions feed the section score.

Two things follow for your preparation. Ten points is the smallest possible movement, so a single question shifts your score by a visible amount. And the four pretest questions stay invisible, so skipping any question risks giving up one of the 40 scored ones.

Build Your Math Score

Work in two passes. First, sit a full 70-minute Math section under real module timing to see which domain you lose the most questions in and where you run out of time. Second, drill the weakest domain until the method is automatic, then retime the whole section.

Order the work by weight. A student losing 5 questions in Advanced Math and 1 in Geometry gains more from a week on quadratics and exponentials than from a week on circle theorems. Repeat the timed section every two weeks rather than every day, because a fresh full-length section is the only honest measure of your pacing.
