How do you convert a percentage to GPA?

How does the 5.0 GPA scale work?
The 5.0 scale is common in systems that grade in whole letters A–F. Under tabular mapping, each 10-point band steps down one grade point: 90%+ is 5.0 (A), 80%+ is 4.0 (B), 70%+ is 3.0 (C), 60%+ is 2.0 (D), and 50%+ is 1.0 (E). Under linear scaling the same percentage is simply multiplied by five.
