Every section on the shortened GRE General Test runs on its own clock. Verbal Reasoning totals 27 questions across two sections in 41 minutes. Quantitative Reasoning totals 27 questions across two sections in 47 minutes. Analytical Writing adds one more task with its own separate window. The full test runs about 1 hour 58 minutes across five sections, a format in effect since September 22, 2023.

Verbal Reasoning Pace
Verbal gives you roughly a minute and a half per question. Section 1 holds 12 questions in 18 minutes, and Section 2 holds 15 questions in 23 minutes, so the pace stays near 90 seconds either way. The clock treats a short vocabulary-in-context item and a question tied to a multi-paragraph passage the same. A dense passage eats into the time budget for the questions sitting next to it inside the same section, so the average hides real swings between question types. Budget the extra reading time inside the section instead of expecting every question to land on the average.
Quantitative Reasoning Pace
Quant gives you about 105 seconds per question in Section 1 and about 104 seconds in Section 2, roughly fifteen seconds more per question than Verbal. The extra time reflects the setup work multi-step math problems need, not slack you are free to spend evenly. A one-line arithmetic question is far quicker to finish than a word problem needing two equations, so the average pace works as a section-wide target rather than a limit on any single question. Time saved on the short problems is what funds the long ones, which makes quick, accurate arithmetic worth drilling on its own.
Analytical Writing Timing
Analytical Writing gives you one Analyze an Issue task in 30 minutes. There is no second task and no per-question clock, so attention stays on one piece of writing from start to finish. The pressure comes from planning, revising and finishing a full argument inside a single fixed window. Spending the opening minutes on an outline leaves fewer minutes for drafting, and it also removes the risk of a response with no clear structure. Write practice essays under the same 30-minute limit so the window feels familiar on test day.
Why Section-Level Adaptivity Raises the Stakes
Verbal and Quant are each section adaptive on the GRE. The first section of each measure sits at average difficulty for every test-taker. Your overall performance on Section 1 sets the difficulty level of Section 2 in the same measure, and your final score accounts for both the number of questions you got right and the difficulty level of the questions you saw.
What Adaptivity Means While You Test
Two consequences follow directly. Accuracy on Section 1 sets the ceiling on the score reachable in Section 2, so the questions inside the opening section carry more weight than their single point value suggests. Feeling a jump in difficulty between Section 1 and Section 2 is a sign the first section went well, not a sign of a mistake.

Protect accuracy on early questions instead of rushing them to save time for the end, since a strong first section buys you a higher score ceiling before the second section even starts. Verbal Reasoning: Vocabulary and Reading Density
Verbal Reasoning packs academic vocabulary and dense passages into a tight per-question pace. Recognizing a word is only half the task, since most Verbal questions test how a word or phrase fits the logic of a sentence or passage, not whether you have seen the word before. A word you know loosely is often enough to pick a wrong answer, because the choices turn on shades of meaning.
