GMAT Testing Accommodations: How to Apply

If a disability affects how you take the GMAT, you are allowed to request testing accommodations from GMAC, the organization behind the exam. Accommodations range from extra testing time to a sign language interpreter. GMAC provides reasonable testing accommodations to test takers who meet its eligibility criteria and properly document the request through an mba.com account. Approval rests on the documentation you submit, not on a self-reported condition alone.

Who Qualifies for Accommodations

GMAC grants accommodations to test takers with a documented disability. Approval depends on meeting GMAC's eligibility criteria and properly documenting the request through your mba.com account. A diagnosis on its own does not trigger an accommodation, and neither does a request with no paperwork behind it. GMAC reviews the disability documentation and the specific accommodation you ask for before granting anything. Build the review time into your plan before you fix a test date.

Accommodation Types GMAC Offers

GMAC lists the accommodation types it approves, covering the exam's timing, environment and format. Approved accommodations match the disability documented in your request. Name the accommodation you need in the request and let the documentation support it. The published types are:

• Additional testing time
• Additional rest break or breaks
• Medical device allowance inside the testing room
• Reader or recorder services
• Enlarged font
• Adjustable screen contrast
• Sign language interpreter

Documentation You Need to Submit

Submit your accommodation request online through your mba.com account with the supporting documentation attached. The documentation must match your disability type, as described in the GMAT Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities. Read the Supplement entry for your disability type before you gather anything, since requirements differ by type. Send the request and every document together, because pieces arriving separately stretch the review.

A shorter path exists if you have already tested with accommodations. For requests limited to 50 percent additional time, an additional rest break, or both, GMAC allows a Confirmation of Prior Accommodations review form in place of full fresh documentation in some cases. Acceptance of the form is conditional, so keep your full documentation ready in case GMAC asks for more. Any request going beyond those two accommodations follows the standard documentation route.

The request runs in a fixed order. Every step happens inside your mba.com account, apart from GMAC's own review. Work through it in sequence:

1. Log in to your mba.com account and start the accommodation request.
2. Attach documentation matching your disability type, following the GMAT Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities. If your request is limited to 50 percent additional time, an additional rest break, or both, a Confirmation of Prior Accommodations review form is accepted in place of full fresh documentation in some cases.
3. Submit the request with all documents together, since separate pieces extend the review.
4. Wait for GMAC's written decision before booking a test appointment.
5. Email [email protected] for a status update on the request.

Request Timeline and Lead Time

GMAC states every effort will be made to respond to accommodation requests within 16 to 20 business days of receipt. Twenty business days runs to four calendar weeks or longer once weekends and holidays fall inside the count. Three situations push a review past the published window:

Working Back From Your Test Date

GMAC publishes a response window, not a recommended lead time in weeks or months. Build your own by counting backwards from the target test date. Start with the 16 to 20 business day response window, add time for GMAC to come back asking for more documentation, then add the days you need to gather the paperwork in the first place. Scheduling waits on the decision letter, so the appointment slot you want has to still be open once approval lands. Check the official accommodations pages for current processing information before you commit to a date, since the response window is the only figure GMAC publishes.

Do not book a test appointment before GMAC approves the request. mba.com advises waiting for the decision letter before scheduling, since accommodations do not apply to a standard appointment booked ahead of approval, and the registration fee for it is forfeited.
