GMAT Online vs Test Center: Which to Choose

GMAT Online vs Test Center: Which to Choose

GMAT Online lets you test from home or another private space you control. The test center option puts you inside a staffed Pearson VUE facility. Both formats deliver the same exam: 2 hours and 15 minutes, 64 questions across three sections, with one optional 10-minute break, scored on the same 205-805 scale. The real differences sit in equipment, note-taking tools, check-in steps and where you spend your break. This guide compares each of those, plus score reporting, rescheduling terms and the technical snags most likely to show up on GMAT Online. System and Room Requirements for GMAT Online

Your computer, internet connection and testing room all need to meet GMAC's published system requirements. Confirm each item the day before your test, not the morning of.

Room and Workspace Rules

At check-in you perform a 360-degree scan of your room and work area with your webcam while the proctor watches. A workspace failing the scan blocks you from starting the exam.

Show your desk, room and surrounding area on camera. The proctor asks you to remove items or adjust the space, then re-checks the room.
Unplug and turn off additional monitors and computers.
Clear your desktop of prohibited items. Water in a clear container is allowed.
Empty any bookshelf within arm's reach of your testing area.
Test in a room with four walls, with the door behind you or visible to the proctor for the whole exam.
Cover glass walls, glass doors and windows before your session starts.

Where GMAT Online Is Not Offered

GMAT Online is available in most locations, with the exception of Mainland China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea and Sudan, due to regulatory and local data privacy rules. Proctoring support is offered in English only. Test takers in those locations book a test center appointment instead. Both formats verify your identity before the exam starts. The steps differ by where you sit.

GMAT Online Check-In

Log in 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to leave room for check-in. The online proctor verifies your photo ID, and your name needs to match your registration exactly. Missing the ID requirements ends your exam, so check your ID against the mba.com ID requirements days ahead.

How GMAT Online Proctoring Works

Live human proctors monitor your video and audio feed for the full session, with AI technology supporting the review. The feed is recorded throughout the session.

Test Center Check-In and Proctoring

At a Pearson VUE center, staff run check-in in person. On test day you present appropriate identification, provide a palm vein scan where permitted by law, provide a digital signature agreeing to the Test Taker Rules and Agreement, and sit for a digital photograph.

Staff supervise the testing room, and personal items stay in a locker. You are allowed to bring your GMAT approved identification, your Pearson VUE appointment confirmation email, prescription eyeglasses without the case, a light sweater or light non-outerwear jacket, and comfort items subject to visual inspection. Your camera keeps running during the optional break, and leaving your computer at any other point ends your session.

Scratch Paper vs Whiteboard

Note-taking tools differ by format. Neither format allows you to bring your own paper or pens.

GMAT Online Whiteboard Options

Pick either a physical whiteboard or the built-in digital tool before your exam starts. Paper, pens, pencils, permanent markers, Boogie Boards, chalkboards and writing tablets are not permitted.

Test Center Noteboards

At the test center, the administrator provides the equivalent of five erasable noteboards, along with a noteboard pen. Fill them up and raise your hand: the administrator collects the used noteboards and hands you replacements, so running out of writing space is not a risk you need to plan around.

Noteboards stay inside the testing room. Return them to the administrator after the exam.

Break Rules: Online vs Test Center

Both formats give you the same break structure. What happens during the break differs.

Each format includes one optional 10-minute break, taken after the first section or after the second section, never both. Take it after section 1 and the option after section 2 disappears. Returning late deducts the extra minutes from your next section.

Online Break Rules

The online break permits a trip away from your desk, and nothing else. Your camera keeps recording while you are gone, and your devices stay out of reach.

Wait for the scheduled break message on screen before you step away.
Leave your desk for the restroom during the break, and leave your camera running while you are away.
Leave a physical whiteboard at your desk or workstation for the whole break.
Phones, other devices and prohibited materials stay out of reach.
Leaving your computer outside the scheduled break ends your session.

Test Center Break Rules

On-screen instructions start your break at the test center, and you wait for the specific scheduled break message before you commence it. Skip the break and your exam restarts in 60 seconds. During the break you are allowed to leave your desk to use the restroom, and your camera stays running. Phones, other devices and prohibited materials remain off-limits, and altering settings at your desk or workstation is not allowed.

Stay inside the test building. Designated locations typically include the locker area, the test center lobby and the nearest restroom. Leaving your computer at any time other than the optional break ends your session.

Do Schools See Which Format You Used?

Yes. The score report a program receives shows the exam date and the delivery format you used.

GMAC states schools receive the basic personal information you supplied at registration, the date and delivery format of your exam, and your score information. The school score report lists your total score, your section scores and the percentile for each. Delivery mode changes none of the numbers: the same 64-question structure across three sections, the same 205-805 scale with every total ending in 5, and 5 years of score validity.

Program acceptance is yours to confirm. GMAC states you are responsible for confirming whether each school and program accepts scores for the exam delivered at a test center, the exam delivered online, or both, and GMAC does not maintain those requirements. Check your target programs before you book.

Score reporting itself runs the same way for both formats.

Rescheduling and Cancellation Flexibility

The reschedule and cancel windows are identical for both formats. One genuine difference exists: the phone channel.

Miss an appointment and you forfeit the full exam fee. Rebooking after a no-show skips the usual 16-day wait, with a 24-hour waiting period instead.

Retake attempts count together across formats. GMAC allows a combined total of five attempts in a rolling 12-month period across test center and online delivery, with a minimum 16-day wait between exams. Common Technical Snags on GMAT Online and How to Avoid Them

Most GMAT Online interruptions trace back to one of the system requirements above. Work through them before test day, not during check-in.

Tethering to a mobile hotspot is prohibited. Test on a stable connection of at least 2 Mbps down and up, and use a wired network if you have one.
A second monitor left plugged in stops the room scan. Unplug and turn off every additional monitor and computer.
Bluetooth microphones and speakers are prohibited. Use wired audio instead.
Work and school computers often carry firewalls or VPN restrictions blocking the exam. GMAC recommends a personal computer.
An outdated browser or blocked cookies stalls the check-in screen. Update your browser, enable cookies and disable pop-up blockers first.
A low-frame-rate webcam fails the check. Confirm yours hits 15fps at 320x240 or better.
A cluttered desk or an uncovered window forces a re-check. Clear the desktop, empty nearby shelves and cover glass before you log in.
