GMAT Test Day Rules and Checklist

TL;DR

Arrive at the GMAT test center at least 30 minutes before your appointment. Refusing check-in forfeits your test fee, and missing your appointment forfeits the full fee too. Bring one valid, original, unexpired government-issued ID matching your mba.com profile exactly, plus a passport if you test outside your country of citizenship. Only your ID, locker key, a light sweater and prescription glasses are allowed at your desk. Phones, watches, calculators, pens and notes go in a locker, not your pocket. You get one optional 10-minute break after section one or two, and you must stay inside the building. The center hands you five erasable noteboards for scratch work instead of paper.

Test day logistics decide whether your GMAT appointment runs smoothly or gets derailed before you answer a single question. The wrong ID, a forgotten locker item, or a late arrival puts your seat and your test fee at risk.

This checklist covers the identification rules, banned items, check-in timing and on-site conduct GMAC enforces at every test center, so you walk in prepared and focus on the exam itself.

Accepted ID Requirements

The test administrator checks your identification against your mba.com profile before you enter the testing room. Any mismatch delays or blocks your check-in.

Bring one valid, original, unexpired, government-issued ID with a recognizable photo and signature. Photocopies, tampered IDs and expired documents, including expired passports with renewal papers, are not accepted.
Your ID name, name order and date of birth must match your mba.com profile exactly, in the Roman alphabet.
A passport is always required when you test outside your country of citizenship, regardless of what other ID you carry.
Acceptable ID types vary by test location. Check the requirements for your specific center before appointment day.

What to Bring and What's Banned

GMAC limits what you carry into the testing room to a short list. Everything else stays home or goes into a locker.

Allowed in the Testing Room

Only a small set of items pass the check-in inspection.

Your ID and locker key, if the center issues one.
A light sweater or non-outerwear jacket.
Prescription eyeglasses without a case. Tinted lenses are allowed.
Permitted comfort items, subject to visual inspection by the test administrator.

Banned Items

The rest stays out of the testing room entirely, and weapons are banned from the premises with no locker exception.

Pens, pencils, markers, paper, chalkboards, writing tablets, books, pamphlets and notes, including anything written on clothing or skin.
Calculators of any kind, including watch calculators.
Phones, headphones, earbuds, stereos, radios, digital music players and any other electronic or photographic device.
Watches of every type: digital, analog and alarm, plus stopwatches.
Weapons, firearms and knives are banned from the premises entirely, with no locker storage exception, even for off-duty law enforcement or concealed-carry permit holders.

Food, Drink and Comfort Items

Food, drink, gum, candy and lip balm are not allowed in the testing room unless pre-approved as a disability accommodation. Food, drink and lip balm are allowed in your locker, and you are allowed to use them during your break.

Check-In Timing and Late Arrival

Check-in starts the moment you walk through the test center doors, not when you sit down at your workstation.

Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.
The test administrator digitally captures your photograph and palm vein pattern at check-in, except where local law prohibits it, and scans your palm again every time you re-enter the testing room. Testing premises are under audio and video monitoring.
Refusing any part of the check-in process means you are not permitted to test, and you forfeit your test fee.
Your full appointment, including check-in, runs about 2.5 hours. Timed exam content itself totals 2 hours 15 minutes across three sections.

GMAC does not publish an exact grace period in minutes for late arrivals. Treat your 30-minute early arrival window as fixed, and confirm your center's specific late policy directly on mba.com before appointment day.

No-Show and Late Cancellation Policy

Missing your appointment costs more than a rescheduling fee.

Candidates who do not show up forfeit the full exam fee, and a new appointment requires a 24-hour wait plus full payment again.
Appointment changes are not allowed within 24 hours of your exam start time.

Personal Items and Locker Rules

The test center gives you limited locker storage for everything you are not allowed to carry into the testing room.

Wallets, purses, bags, hats, watches, large jewelry, hair clips and coats are not permitted in the testing room.
Study notes and materials brought to the center must go in your locker. If no locker is available, leave them at home.
Notes, study materials and devices stored in your locker are off limits once check-in begins, including during your break.

Pack light. Anything you do not need at your desk becomes one more item to manage under a locked door for over two hours.

Rules During the Exam

Once check-in ends, GMAC rules govern your break, your seat and every word you exchange with anyone in the building. A violation costs you the score and the fee, not a warning. Read the three sets of rules below before appointment day, so none of them surprise you at the workstation.

Optional Break Rules

You get one built-in pause across all three sections.

One optional 10-minute break is available, taken after either the first or second section, not both.
You must stay inside the test center building, in designated areas such as the locker area, the lobby or check-in area, or the nearest restroom.
Running over your break time deducts the excess from your next section, or the test administrator treats the exam as abandoned and cancels your score.
No phones or other devices are accessible during the break.

Leaving Your Seat

You are not allowed to leave your workstation while the timed sections are administered, so raise your hand if you have an emergency. Leaving the testing room itself requires the test administrator's permission. The section clock keeps running through any emergency departure, and repeated or lengthy absences get documented and investigated.

Confidentiality and Conduct

Communicating or appearing to communicate with anyone about exam content, during the test, the break, or after your appointment ends, is a policy violation. Disclosing or removing test content in any form cancels scores and forfeits fees.

You are not allowed to move forward without answering the question on screen. A Question Review and Edit page then opens at the end of each section, with a limit of three answer changes per section. Decide your per-question pacing before you start, and save the three edits for the questions you bookmarked. Scratch Tools Provided at the Center

Paper and pens stay banned, but the center equips you with erasable scratch tools instead.

The test administrator provides the equivalent of five laminated, wet-erase noteboards. Raise your hand for a replacement once a board fills up.
Noteboards stay in the testing room and get returned to the administrator after your exam ends.
Writing on your noteboard is only allowed once the timed portion of the section begins, not before.
