GMAT Data Insights Section Guide

Data Insights is the newest GMAT section and the one most candidates have never practiced before. It gives you 20 questions in 45 minutes and asks you to pull answers out of tables, graphs, short reports and logic problems, often from two sources at once. Five separate formats share those 20 slots, so the screen in front of you changes shape every few minutes. The work rewards fast reading and clean judgement more than formula recall.

It also counts. On the retired exam, the closest section, Integrated Reasoning, sat outside the Total Score on its own 1 to 8 scale. Data Insights sits inside the Total Score with the same weight as Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning. Skipping it in preparation now costs you points on the number admissions committees read first.

What Data Insights Measures

Data Insights checks how well you read information presented in more than one form and combine it into a single decision. One question set puts numbers in a table, a trend in a chart and a limit in a sentence, then asks for the conclusion all three support. No single source holds the whole answer, so the skill under test is synthesis rather than lookup. Miss one panel and you answer a different question from the one asked.

No finance or statistics coursework is required. The work is careful reading, unit checks, ratio sense and the judgement to stop calculating once an answer is already settled. Arithmetic stays light while the reading load stays heavy, which reverses the balance most people expect from a data section. Decide what a question needs before you touch any numbers.

Section Timing and Question Count

All three GMAT sections run 45 minutes. Data Insights holds the fewest questions of the three, and the whole exam runs 2 hours 15 minutes of testing time. The table below sets the three sections side by side so you see how the per question budget differs.

Split evenly, 45 minutes over 20 questions leaves 2 minutes 15 seconds per question. GMAC frames the target differently and recommends about 7 questions every 15 minutes, with 5 or 6 solved and 1 or 2 skipped. The second framing is the useful one, because a Multi-Source Reasoning set eats far more time than a single Table Analysis item. You also choose the order of the three sections and take one optional 10 minute break after the first or the second section, so Data Insights sits wherever your concentration is strongest.

Where Data Insights Sits in Your Score

Each section is reported on its own 60 to 90 scale in single point steps, and the Total Score runs 205 to 805 with every value ending in 5. Section scores stay on the report next to the total, so a reader sees where your points come from. Two candidates with the same total look different when one of them carries a weak Data Insights score. Read your own report the same way and treat the lowest section as your next study block.

The Total Score is built from all three section scores in equal weight, so a 10 point move in Data Insights matters as much as the same move in Quant. No section carries extra weight and none is discounted, which makes your weakest section the cheapest place to gain points. The Five Question Formats

Five formats share the 20 question pool, and the screen layout changes with each one. GMAC lists them as Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation and Two-Part Analysis. Prepare all five, since you have no control over the mix appearing on your test. The table below maps what each format puts on screen and what it wants back from you.

Data Sufficiency

Data Sufficiency hands you a question and two statements. You decide whether statement one alone, statement two alone, both together or neither settles it. The final value rarely needs computing, because the task ends the moment sufficiency is clear.

Two question types appear. Value questions ask for a specific quantity and need exactly one possible answer to count as sufficient. Yes/no questions ask whether a claim holds and need a consistent yes or a consistent no, since a statement producing both outcomes is insufficient.

Two-Part Analysis

Two-Part Analysis gives a prompt and a table with two response columns and one row per option. You pick one row in each column, and the two picks are linked. Typical setups ask for a pair of values satisfying an equation, or for a premise and a conclusion drawn from one argument.

Work the tighter constraint first. Scan both columns before selecting anything, then solve the side with fewer workable options and use the result to narrow the other. Check the two selections together against the prompt, since they have to hold as a set. Testing every possible pair burns the clock for no gain.

Graphics Interpretation

Graphics Interpretation shows one visual, a scatter plot, a bar chart, a line graph or a less common display, followed by sentences with blanks. Each blank is completed from a drop down list of options. The sentences ask about a relationship, a rate of change or a comparison, and you settle each one against the graphic. Reading volume is small here, so the difficulty sits in the visual itself.

The visual is where errors start. Read the axis labels, the units and the scale before you open a drop down, and check whether the vertical axis begins at zero. Most wrong answers here come from a misread axis rather than a misread sentence.

Table Analysis

Table Analysis gives a spreadsheet style table with a sort control, plus a set of statements to judge as yes or no, true or false, or a similar pair. Sorting is the whole technique. Sort by the column named in the statement, then read the top or the bottom rows instead of scanning every line by eye. Judge each statement on its own, because one false statement does not make its neighbours false. Multi-Source Reasoning

Multi-Source Reasoning carries the heaviest reading load in the section. Two or three tabs hold text, a table, an email exchange or a chart, and questions draw on more than one tab at a time. One source set feeds several questions, so the upfront reading is paid once and used repeatedly. The trap is answering from the tab already open instead of the tab holding the answer.

Read every tab once before answering, at speed, mapping where each kind of information lives. Then return to the exact tab a question needs. Data Insights Versus Integrated Reasoning

The exam changed on 1 February 2024, when the GMAT Focus Edition launched. GMAC has since dropped the Focus label from its pages and markets the test simply as the GMAT exam. Older prep books still describe the previous structure, which is why the Integrated Reasoning comparison keeps causing confusion. Data Insights carries the former Integrated Reasoning question types plus Data Sufficiency, updated for data and digital literacy and folded into the Total Score. The table below sets the retired section against the current one.

The practical effect is direct. Weak Integrated Reasoning performance used to dent a side number an admissions reader glanced at. Weak Data Insights performance now pulls down the total printed on every score report.

The On-Screen Calculator

Data Insights is the only section with computing help. The on-screen calculator is built into Data Insights alone, and neither Quantitative Reasoning nor Verbal Reasoning provides one. Computing help therefore covers 20 of the 64 questions on the exam, and mental arithmetic still decides your Quant score.

Treat it as a backstop rather than a default tool. Every open, click and clear costs seconds you do not have at a shade over 2 minutes per question. The keypad also invites you to compute values the question never needed, which is the more expensive habit. The rules below keep the calculator in its place.

  • Reach for it on long division, awkward percentages and multi digit multiplication.
  • Leave it closed for anything estimation settles, because clicking through the keypad costs more time than the arithmetic saves.
  • Estimate first, then confirm with the calculator only when two options sit close together.
  • Rehearse with an on-screen calculator during practice, not a handheld one, so the mouse work is familiar on test day.
  • Keep drilling mental arithmetic for Quantitative Reasoning, where no calculator exists.

Why Data Insights Catches People Out

Most candidates arrive with Quant and Verbal habits and no Data Insights routine at all. Twenty questions reads as the lightest workload of the three sections until you sit one under the clock. Four structural features make the section harder than its question count suggests.

  • The format changes question to question. You move from a sortable table to a two column grid to a two statement logic problem with no warning, and every switch costs attention.
  • Reading volume is high for the clock. A Multi-Source Reasoning set holds more text than many Reading Comprehension passages, and the section still runs 45 minutes for 20 questions.
  • Answers have more than one part. Graphics Interpretation blanks and Two-Part Analysis columns ask for several responses inside one question, so accuracy has to hold across each of them.
  • Data Sufficiency asks a different question from everything else. You judge whether an answer is reachable instead of producing it, and the habit takes repetition to build.
