Multi-Source Reasoning and Two-Part Analysis are two of the five Data Insights question types on the GMAT, alongside Data Sufficiency, Table Analysis, and Graphics Interpretation. Data Insights holds 20 questions in 45 minutes and is scored on a 60 to 90 scale, one of three section scores feeding into the 205 to 805 Total Score. Both formats ask you to work with more than one piece of information at once: Multi-Source Reasoning spreads facts across tabs, and Two-Part Analysis links two unknowns in one table.

This guide covers the interface for each format, the sub-types you meet inside Multi-Source Reasoning sets, how a Two-Part Analysis question differs from two separate Data Sufficiency questions, and time-management moves suited to multi-part prompts. Multi-Source Reasoning: Working Across Tabs

Multi-Source Reasoning presents information across two or three labeled tabs. Each tab holds a different kind of content: a paragraph of text, a diagram, a chart, or a data table. Answering a question often means moving between tabs to find and combine the facts you need before you pick a response.

How to Navigate the Tabs

Read each tab once before you open the question stem, and note what type of content sits in each one, a paragraph, a chart, or a table. Click the tab headers to move between sources, then combine the numbers or claims a question names.

  • Skim every tab first so you know where each fact lives before a question asks for it.
  • Reread only the tab a question stem points to, rather than all tabs again.
  • Watch for units, dates, or labels differing slightly between tabs. A mismatch there is a frequent trap.

Common MSR Sub-Types

Multi-Source Reasoning questions appear in two formats.

  • Binary statement sets, labelled true/false, yes/no or similar: you judge several statements against the combined sources and mark each one.
  • Single-answer questions: a standard multiple-choice question tied to the same tabs, with one correct choice among the options.

Neither format offers partial credit. Every judgment in a binary statement set has to be correct for the set to count. Treat a multi-statement set as one combined answer, and verify each statement against the tabs before you submit.

Two-Part Analysis: Two Linked Unknowns

Two-Part Analysis is presented as one table with two answer columns. You pick one answer from each column to satisfy two interdependent parts of a single prompt, and the same value is sometimes the right choice for both columns. The two columns share one prompt and one underlying relationship, so you solve them together rather than one after the other.

Read the full prompt before touching the table. Identify what each column represents, write down the relationship connecting the two unknowns, and solve for both values on scratch paper before scanning the answer options.

  • Name what each column asks for in your own words first.
  • Write the equation or logical rule linking the two unknowns.
  • Solve for both values, then match each one to the closest option in its column.
  • Check your pair of answers against the original relationship before moving on.

Two-Part Analysis vs a Two-Question Data Sufficiency Pair

Data Sufficiency is its own question type inside Data Insights, and each Data Sufficiency question stands alone with its own pair of statements. Two-Part Analysis is different: it packages two selections into one connected problem inside a single table, and the two picks share the same underlying relationship. The table holds two interdependent sub-questions, and you make one selection in each column, so both parts need to be correct together. There is no split credit for getting one column right and the other wrong.

Scoring and the No-Partial-Credit Rule

Each of the three section scores contributes equally to the Total Score, and the full exam runs 2 hours 15 minutes with one optional 10-minute break. Results from Multi-Source Reasoning and Two-Part Analysis feed the Data Insights section score, which carries the same weight as Quant and Verbal. Because neither format grants partial credit, treat every sub-part of an MSR set or a TPA question as one combined answer rather than separate wins.

Time Management for Multi-Part Prompts

Data Insights gives you 20 questions in 45 minutes, an average of about 2 minutes 15 seconds per question. Multi-Source Reasoning and Two-Part Analysis prompts take longer to read than a single-paragraph question, so plan for the extra reading time before the section starts, not during it.

  • Budget extra minutes for the first question in an MSR set, since reading the tabs takes most of the time. Later questions on the same tabs move faster.
  • For Two-Part Analysis, spend your time setting up the relationship between the two unknowns rather than testing options one by one.
  • Use the onscreen calculator, provided in Data Insights but not in Quant, to check table math instead of doing it by hand.
  • If a set with several binary judgments is running long, lock in your best answers and move forward, since a partial set earns the same score as a fully wrong one.

Sample Walkthroughs

Multi-Source Reasoning Walkthrough

Tab 1 lists three warehouse locations with their square footage. Tab 2 lists the monthly rent for each location, and Tab 3 holds a memo stating the company needs a location under 5,000 square feet with rent below 8,000 dollars a month. A statement reads: at least two of the three locations meet the memo's requirements. Cross-reference the size in Tab 1 with the rent in Tab 2 for each location, then test both figures against the two limits in Tab 3.

  1. Location A: 4,200 square feet at 7,500 dollars a month, inside both limits.
  2. Location B: 5,500 square feet at 6,900 dollars a month, over the space limit despite the lower rent.
  3. Location C: 3,800 square feet at 8,400 dollars a month, over the rent limit.

Only Location A clears both conditions, so the statement is false. Location B fails on space and Location C fails on rent, and each one passes the other test. Single-tab reading would mark both as workable, which is why the cross-reference step decides the answer.

Two-Part Analysis Walkthrough

A prompt states a company splits a 60,000 dollar monthly ad budget between two channels, and the search channel receives 15,000 dollars more than the social channel. Column 1 asks for the search channel spend, and Column 2 asks for the social channel spend. Build one equation from the two facts, solve it, then match each value to its column.

  1. Let the social spend equal x, so the search spend equals x plus 15,000.
  2. The two channels sum to the budget: x plus x plus 15,000 equals 60,000.
  3. Simplify to 2x plus 15,000 equals 60,000, so x equals 22,500.
  4. Social spend is 22,500 dollars and search spend is 37,500 dollars.
  5. Select 37,500 in the Column 1 list and 22,500 in the Column 2 list.

Check the pair against the prompt before you move on. The two figures add to 60,000 dollars and differ by 15,000 dollars, so both conditions hold. One wrong column would lose the whole question, since the format grants no partial credit.
