You read a chart or a table first, decide what it shows, then answer a statement built around your reading.

The two formats share one root skill: pulling an exact value from a visual or a grid without extrapolating past what the data supports. Data Insights carries the same weight as Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning toward your Total Score, so a shaky read on either format costs real points. Miss an axis label on a chart or sort the wrong column in a table, and every statement built on it falls apart. Graphics Interpretation: Reading Chart Type and Axes Correctly

Every Graphics Interpretation item opens with a chart and a short paragraph of context. Your first read decides whether the rest of your answer holds up, so slow down before you touch the statement.

Identify the Chart Type First

Five chart types appear on the exam: scatter plot, x/y graph, bar chart, pie chart, and statistical curve distribution. Each type encodes data differently, so name the type before you read a single value. A scatter plot spreads two variables across dots, an x/y graph traces one variable against another as a line or curve, a bar chart compares categories with height or length, a pie chart splits a whole into proportional slices, and a statistical curve distribution shows how often values fall across a range.

Read the Axes, Units, and Labels

Check both axis labels and each unit, such as dollars, percent, or thousands of units, before you read a value off the chart. A bar chart with an axis starting above zero exaggerates the difference between bars. Read the title and any footnote too, since GMAT charts often define a term or a time period there, and a wrong assumption about the period changes your answer.

The Drop-Down Statement Format

Graphics Interpretation questions use a chart or graph, and you find or extrapolate a value to complete a fill-in-the-blank statement chosen from a drop-down list. Read the sentence around each blank fully before you open the drop-down, since the wording often narrows the range of correct values on its own. Match the units in the sentence to the units on the chart, because a mismatch between a percent and a raw count sends you to the wrong option.

Table Analysis: Using the Sort Function Efficiently

Table Analysis gives you a grid of numbers and a set of statements to evaluate. The table is sortable, and sorting it well saves you from scanning every row by eye.

How the Sortable Table Works

Table Analysis presents a sortable table of data, similar to a spreadsheet, used to determine what information is relevant or meets certain conditions. Sorting reorders the rows by the column you pick, the way a spreadsheet sort does. Sort by the column named in a statement first, since a sorted list groups the rows you need together instead of scattering them across the full table. The on-screen controls get updated from time to time, so work through the official sample questions on mba.com to see the current interface before test day.

Marking Statements True or False

Each Table Analysis screen pairs the grid with a sortable table containing numeric data, and you determine whether a set of statements are true or false. Sort the table by the field named in a statement, isolate the matching rows, then check the statement against those rows only. Work through every statement attached to one table before you move on, and re-read any statement you answered quickly.

Time Management for Data-Heavy Prompts

  • Spend the first 10 to 15 seconds on orientation only: chart type, axis units, or table headers, before you read the statement.

  • Sort a Table Analysis grid once and answer every statement tied to it before you resort the table again.
  • Flag a question and move on if the chart or table takes more than a minute to read, then return once the rest of the section is done.

The two original examples below follow the same format as the real exam, without reusing any official question.

Graphics Interpretation Walkthrough

A bar chart shows the number of new stores a retail chain opened each year from 2019 through 2023: 12, 18, 15, 22, and 27 stores. The x-axis lists the year and the y-axis lists store count, starting at zero. A statement reads: the year with the largest increase in new stores over the prior year is [drop-down]. Compare each year-over-year change: 6, negative 3, 7, and 5. The largest increase is 7, which happened in 2022, so 2022 is the correct drop-down choice.

Table Analysis Walkthrough

A table lists five employees with columns for department, years of experience, and current salary. One statement reads: at least three employees in the Sales department earn more than 60,000. Sort by department to pull every Sales row together, then read the salary column for those rows only. Count how many Sales rows list a salary above 60,000. If three or more rows qualify, mark the statement true, and if fewer than three, mark it false.
