GRE Cost and Fees

The standard GRE General Test costs $249 in most countries and $231.30 in Mainland China, effective August 1, 2026. The GRE Subject Test costs $199 worldwide. Add-on costs, such as rescheduling, additional score reports and score reinstatement, apply on top of the base fee whenever you use those services.

This guide breaks down every fee ETS charges around the GRE, from registration through score reporting. It also covers the Fee Reduction Program, which cuts the price for eligible US test takers, and where you pay when you register. Every figure below reflects the 2026-27 testing year, running July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027.

GRE General Test and Subject Test Fees

The standard GRE General Test fee is $249 in all areas outside Mainland China, effective August 1, 2026. Test takers in Mainland China pay $231.30. The GRE Subject Test costs $199 worldwide, also effective August 1, 2026.

Two things change the number you pay at checkout. ETS prices GRE registration separately for India on the ETS India site, outside the global fee schedule, so Indian test takers should read the current fee there rather than the figures above. The ETS fees page lists the 27 European Union countries plus Australia, Canada, Colombia, Nigeria, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Turkey, the United States and Vietnam as places where tax is added at checkout, which pushes your final charge above the listed fee. The 2026-27 Bulletin adds Chile to the same list, so budget for tax there as well.

Rescheduling and Test Center Change Fees

Rescheduling your test date costs $55 in all areas outside Mainland China, or $53.90 within Mainland China. You must reschedule at least 4 days before your test date, or 10 days before in Mainland China, or you forfeit the full test fee. Changing your test center also costs $55.

Deadline to Reschedule Without Losing Your Fee

Submit your reschedule request at least 4 days before your test date in most areas, or 10 days before in Mainland China. Miss the deadline and ETS keeps the entire test fee, so a late reschedule costs the same as skipping the test. A missed deadline leaves you registering and paying the full fee from scratch, which turns a $55 change into a $249 one.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Your refund depends on one date: how many days remain before your test date. Cancel no later than 4 days before your test date, or 10 days before in Mainland China, and ETS refunds half of the original test fee automatically, whatever your registration date. Miss the deadline and nothing comes back:

1. 4 or more days before your test date, or 10 or more days in Mainland China: 50% of the original test fee, refunded automatically.
2. Fewer than 4 days before your test date, or fewer than 10 days in Mainland China: no refund at all.

Test takers in Korea sit under a separate Bulletin table, where the refund tracks how soon you cancel after registering: within 7 days of registering returns 100% of the fee, and 8 or more days after registering returns 50%. Those percentages apply in Korea alone. Wherever you test, ETS pays no refund in cash.

Some charges never come back. Prep materials, Additional Score Reports and other service fees are non-refundable. Cancelling and rescheduling are different actions: a $55 reschedule keeps your registration alive on a new date, while a cancellation ends it, with your refund set by the timing rules above.

Late Registration Fee

ETS charges no separate late registration fee for the GRE General Test or Subject Test. Online registration instead closes 2 calendar days before your preferred test date, and phone registration closes 2 business days before, both subject to seat availability. Register as early as possible through the GRE registration process to secure your preferred date and test center.

Additional Score Report Fees

Your GRE General Test registration includes 4 free score recipients, selected on test day through ScoreSelect (Most Recent or All). Additional Score Reports cost $40 per recipient. Score Reinstatement and Other Service Fees

ETS charges separate fees for a few less common services after test day. Reinstating previously canceled scores costs $50, and you have 60 days from your test date to request it. Two review services also carry fees: a Question-and-Answer review at $50 and a Score Review for Analytical Writing at $60. The Question-and-Answer review is limited to New York residents.

GRE Fee Reduction Program

The GRE Fee Reduction Program lowers the test fee for eligible US test takers. Eligibility is limited to US citizens and resident aliens, and the 2026-27 GRE Information Bulletin restricts the discount to testing inside the United States, American Samoa, Guam, the US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico. You apply before registering, then pay the reduced price with the voucher ETS issues.

Eligibility Tracks

You qualify through one of four tracks:

• Financial need: a college senior receiving financial aid with a FAFSA Student Aid Index (SAI) of zero or less, or an unenrolled college graduate who applied for aid with an SAI of zero or less.
• Unemployed and receiving unemployment compensation.
• Active Peace Corps Volunteer.
• Participant in an ETS-designated national program serving underrepresented, first generation or financial-need students.

A voucher fixes the General Test price at $100 and halves the Subject Test price:

The General Test voucher also includes free POWERPREP PLUS practice tests 1 and 2 and ScoreItNow! writing practice, valued at $110 on the Fee Reduction Program page. The Subject Test voucher covers the 50% price cut alone. Counting fees only, a General Test voucher takes $149 off your registration.

How to Apply

Apply using the GRE Fee Reduction Request form, linked from the Fee Reduction Program page. The 2026-27 Bulletin tells you to allow up to 3 weeks for processing, so submit well before your target test date. Register with the voucher number once it arrives and pay the reduced price at checkout. Three voucher rules are worth knowing before you apply:

• Vouchers do not work retroactively: apply before you register, not after you pay full price.
• ETS does not replace a lost or stolen voucher.
• Unused vouchers are non-refundable.

How and Where to Pay GRE Fees

Pay your fees inside your ETS Account at ets.org/mygre during online registration, or by phone, as part of GRE registration. A fee reduction voucher is redeemed in the same flow, by entering the voucher number instead of paying the full amount. ETS accepts these forms of payment:

• Credit or debit cards: American Express, Diners Club, Discover, JCB, Mastercard, RuPay Global, UnionPay and VISA.
• PayPal.
• Bank pay, for US banks and customers only.
• Alipay+ regional e-wallets, including AlipayHK, KakaoPay, GCash, Touch 'n Go, TrueMoney, Dana and Akulaku.
• An authorization voucher.

ETS does not accept cash, checks or money orders. Online payments carry a non-refundable 4% service fee added to your total charge. An unpaid balance adds a $30 non-refundable service fee and holds back your score reporting until you pay in full.
