IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills: Key Differences

TL;DR

IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills are the only two IELTS versions the Home Office accepts for visa applications. Standard IELTS does not count.

IELTS for UKVI: same Academic or General Training format, for four-skill routes like Skilled Worker and Student.

IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills: Key Differences

Standard IELTS, IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills share a name, but the UK Home Office treats them as separate products. IELTS for UKVI covers all four skills for work and study routes. IELTS Life Skills covers speaking and listening only, at A1, A2 or B1, for family, settlement and citizenship routes. Standard IELTS counts for neither.

This guide sets out what each version covers, which visa category needs which test, where you are allowed to sit it, and what happens if you book the wrong one. It also covers the settlement rule change taking effect on 26 March 2027, which raises the speaking and listening requirement above the highest IELTS Life Skills level. Read the settlement notes before booking if your goal is indefinite leave to remain.

Standard IELTS vs IELTS for UKVI

Standard IELTS Academic and General Training follow the same test format as IELTS for UKVI Academic and General Training. The format overlap means our free IELTS practice tests work for both versions. The difference sits in the booking and reporting process. IELTS for UKVI results go through the extra security checks required for Home Office applications, and the result is accepted only when you sit the test in person at an official IELTS for UKVI center, per ielts.org.

If you use IELTS, only the UKVI version counts. A standard IELTS Academic or General Training result is not accepted for a visa application, according to ielts.org. IELTS is one option among several, since UK Visas and Immigration also approves LANGUAGECERT, Pearson and Trinity College London, depending on where you sit the test. Book through an approved SELT provider and select the UKVI version for your visa category.

IELTS Life Skills: Speaking and Listening Only

IELTS Life Skills tests speaking and listening in a single combined session. It leaves out reading and writing entirely, unlike standard IELTS or IELTS for UKVI, according to ielts.org. The test is offered at three CEFR levels: A1, A2 and B1. Scoring also works differently, since the result is reported as a Pass or a Fail instead of a 1-9 band score, so prepare for the level your visa category requires rather than aiming at a band.

The three levels line up with the stages of a family route, from a first application through to settlement, per gov.uk. Other routes set their own level, and ielts.org refers applicants to UK Visas and Immigration for it, so treat the table as orientation and confirm the requirement for your own category before booking.

The B1 level covers settlement only up to 25 March 2027. Statement of Changes HC 1691, laid on 5 March 2026, raises the settlement and indefinite leave to remain speaking and listening requirement from B1 to B2 for applications made on or after 26 March 2027, per gov.uk. IELTS Life Skills stops at B1, so from then it no longer satisfies the settlement requirement and you need a two-skill SELT reported at B2.

Which Visa Category Needs Which Test

UK Visas and Immigration splits routes into two SELT types: a four-skill test and a two-skill test. Your category decides which one you need, according to gov.uk. The required CEFR level sits in the rules for your route, not in the test product itself.

Four-Skill SELT: IELTS for UKVI

These routes require reading, writing, speaking and listening, so you book IELTS for UKVI Academic or General Training depending on your category.

The Student route carries an exception. If your course is at degree level with a higher education provider holding a track record of compliance, your sponsor is allowed to assess your English itself instead of asking for a SELT, per gov.uk. Two-Skill SELT: IELTS Life Skills

These routes require speaking and listening only, so you book a two-skill SELT at the level your category specifies. IELTS Life Skills covers A1, A2 and B1.

Settlement needs the closest reading. IELTS Life Skills is offered at A1, A2 and B1 only, so it meets the settlement requirement for applications made up to 25 March 2027. From 26 March 2027 you need a two-skill SELT reported at B2 from an approved provider, since no IELTS Life Skills level reaches B2. Confirm the level for your own route on gov.uk before booking.

Family and Partner Visas: CEFR Level Progression

Family and partner routes raise the required level in stages, per gov.uk. The settlement stage moves from B1 to B2 under Statement of Changes HC 1691, laid on 5 March 2026, for applications made on or after 26 March 2027, per gov.uk. Match the stage you are at to the level in the table below.

Where to Take IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills

Both versions are sat only at UKVI-approved SELT centers, in the UK and abroad, according to gov.uk. A standard IELTS test center is not a substitute for a SELT booking. Approved providers differ by location, so check the list for the country where you plan to sit the test.

Inside the UK, providers include Trinity College London, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LANGUAGECERT and Pearson. Outside the UK, providers include PSI Services (UK) Ltd, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LANGUAGECERT and Pearson. SELT results stay valid for 2 years from the date the test is awarded, per gov.uk. Book early enough for your result to still be valid on the day you submit your visa application. If you apply for settlement on or after 26 March 2027, an existing B1 pass will not meet the B2 requirement even while it sits inside the 2 year window.

What Happens If You Book the Wrong Version

Only IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills count for Home Office applications. A standard IELTS Academic or General Training result is not accepted, whatever the band score, according to ielts.org. Confirm the requirement for your own category on the official gov.uk SELT page before you book. Settlement applicants should check the dated B2 change as well, since the requirement follows the date the application is made, not the date you sit the test.
