What Is the IELTS One Skill Retake

One Skill Retake lets you resit a single skill, Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking, instead of the whole four-part test, according to ielts.org. Your other three original skill scores stay in place, and only the retaken skill produces a new score. IELTS recalculates your overall band using this new figure alongside your three unchanged scores. If one section pulled your average down while the rest met your target, OSR targets the fix without asking you to sit skills you already passed.

Who Qualifies for OSR

The 60-Day Window and One-Attempt Limit

You must sit your OSR within 60 days of your original test date, as set out on ielts.org. Miss this window and OSR is no longer an option for this sitting. You are allowed only one OSR attempt per original full test. A second attempt at the same skill, or a switch to a different skill, requires a fresh full test first.

Requirements on Your Original Test

Your original test must have been taken on computer, at a test centre offering OSR, before you are allowed to book a retake. OSR covers both Academic and General Training, and UKVI computer-delivered tests are accepted for OSR in selected locations, according to the IELTS One Skill Retake FAQs. Your retake also has to run in the same delivery mode as your original test.

IELTS is introducing Writing on Paper in selected markets, an option to handwrite your Writing answers inside the computer-delivered test, and One Skill Retake will be available for Writing on Paper under the same delivery-mode rule, according to ielts.org. This is a handwriting choice within a computer-delivered test, not a paper-based test. The same page states IELTS will stop offering a paper-based test from mid-2026, with all IELTS tests delivered on computer. The computer-delivered requirement for OSR therefore stops being a barrier in most markets once the switch completes.

Where OSR Is Offered

OSR is offered in more than 110 countries where IELTS runs, and IELTS is adding more countries and test centres on a monthly basis, according to the IELTS One Skill Retake FAQs. Exact availability still depends on your specific test centre. The United States is a clear exception, since British Council states One Skill Retake is currently not available for tests taken in the USA, according to its One Skill Retake FAQs. If you test in the USA, a full retake is your only route to a new score. Check the official OSR booking page for your own centre before you plan around OSR, since coverage keeps expanding and centres without it today are added in later months.

How the Combined Score Report Works

OSR results are issued within 3 to 5 days of the retake, according to the IELTS One Skill Retake FAQs. This turnaround is faster than the wait for a full test result. IELTS then issues a new Test Report Form showing your retaken skill's new score plus your other three original skill scores, with the overall band recalculated from these four figures, according to ielts.org. Your original Test Report Form stays valid too, so you decide which report to send to a receiving organisation.

Who Accepts OSR Results

Government bodies in Australia, New Zealand and the UK (UKVI) accept OSR results for visa and migration purposes, according to ielts.org. Some universities and professional or regulatory bodies accept OSR too, but each receiving organisation has to register with IELTS to receive OSR scores, so acceptance is not universal. No official page names every institution accepting OSR, which leaves the check with you.

Contact your receiving institution directly and confirm it accepts an OSR-combined Test Report Form before you book a retake instead of a full test. Ask for the answer in writing, and ask whether the institution reads the OSR report as a single valid result. A wrong assumption here burns your 60-day window.

OSR vs a Full Retake

OSR saves time when only one skill needs fixing. You prepare for and sit one section instead of four, book within a 60-day window of your original test, and get results in 3 to 5 days rather than waiting for a full retest to run and report. The money side runs the same way, since OSR is priced below a full test in the markets publishing both figures.

ielts.org does not publish an OSR price, and fees are set locally, so amounts differ by market. In Australia, the official IELTS fee schedule lists One Skill Retake at A$310 against A$490 for IELTS Academic or General Training, according to IELTS Australia. OSR therefore runs at roughly two thirds of the full test fee in this market. Confirm the current figure with your own test centre, since fees are set by location and change over time.
