IELTS Test Dates: How to Choose One

Your test date decides two things: how soon your score arrives, and how many weeks of preparation you have left. IELTS is delivered on computer, and computer sittings run far more often than the old paper schedule did. In many locations you have a choice of up to 7 days a week and up to 3 sittings a day. Results usually reach you 1 to 2 days after the test.

IELTS on paper is retired. The IELTS Partners announced the move to computer delivery in March 2026, and the last paper date in most markets was 27 June 2026. Two alternatives remain if handwriting matters to you: Writing on Paper and IELTS Online. All availability and turnaround figures in this guide are current as of August 2026.

Where and How Often IELTS Runs

IELTS runs at over 4,500 test locations in over 160 countries. Session frequency is set centre by centre, so a large city venue offers more slots than a small one. The official test date finder is the only place with the real calendar for your city. Check it before you fix a preparation timeline, not after.

Computer-Delivered Test Dates

IDP lists IELTS on computer as available up to 7 days a week and up to 3 times a day at its Bangladesh centres, and other markets publish their own per centre schedules. Read your own city off the official test date finder before you count on a daily slot. Listening, Reading and Writing run one after another on the same day. Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, and some centres schedule it up to 7 days before or after your main test date. Confirm the Speaking arrangement when you book, because it moves the day your full result is complete.

The End of IELTS on Paper

IELTS on paper ran on a fixed calendar: 48 dates a year, up to four dates a month. Computer delivery replaced it, with the final paper sitting in most markets on 27 June 2026. Exact timelines varied by market, and several countries stopped earlier: the last paper date in Canada was 7 May 2026. No paper sitting is bookable in those markets now, whatever an older guide says.

The practical effect on date choice is large. A paper candidate picked from roughly one date a week at best, and often waited for the next monthly slot. A computer candidate picks from sittings repeating through the week, so a booking mistake costs days instead of a month. Use the old cadence only as a benchmark for how much more room you have now.

Writing on Paper and IELTS Online

Writing on Paper keeps the computer test and lets you handwrite the Writing component on an official answer sheet. Listening and Reading stay on screen. Results arrive within 5 days after your test date, slower than a standard computer sitting. The option is limited to selected markets, so confirm it at your centre before you plan around it.

IELTS Online is sat on your own computer away from a test centre. Results usually arrive within 6 to 8 days, the slowest of the three live formats. Not every receiving organisation accepts it, so check the requirement of your university or visa authority first. With a deadline under two weeks away, a test centre computer slot is the safer booking.

How Results Turnaround Affects Your Date Choice

Your results wait is part of the deadline arithmetic, not an afterthought. Official turnaround runs from 1 day for a computer sitting to 8 days for IELTS Online. The table below compares the three bookable formats, with the retired paper figures kept for reference only. Read the slowest number in each range as your planning figure.

IELTS.org puts computer-delivered results at 1 to 2 days for most candidates. Globally around 80 percent of scores are ready within 2 days, and about half within 1 day. IDP's global page states a wider window of 1 to 5 days, so build your plan on 5 days rather than 1. Regional pages sometimes quote faster numbers, for example IDP Bangladesh markets results in as little as 1 day.

Paper results took 13 days in most locations, or 7 days in India. Those figures are history as of 27 June 2026 in most markets, and no booking uses them. They are worth knowing only when you compare an older score report timeline against a new one.

Work Backward From Your Deadline to Pick a Date

Deadline planning runs in reverse. Start from the day your score must be in hand, then subtract the results wait and the preparation weeks. The steps below use computer-delivered turnaround, since it is the only in-centre option you are able to book. Leave a margin at the end, because a score at the top of the range still needs time to reach the receiving institution.

Fix your hard deadline, the day the university, employer or visa office needs your score.
Subtract 5 days for results, the top of IDP's global 1 to 5 day range. Most candidates get a score sooner, so the extra days are your buffer.
Subtract the preparation weeks your band gap needs, using the table in the next section.
Check the remaining window against the official test date finder for a real slot at your centre.
Confirm your Speaking date at booking. Some centres schedule it up to 7 days before or after the main test, which shifts your completion date.
Leave room for one retake if the deadline allows it. A second computer sitting is bookable within days in many locations, so reserve one extra week.
Skip IELTS Online when your window is under two weeks, since its results take 6 to 8 days.

Match Your Date to a Study Plan

The gap between your current band and your target sets your plan length. Sit a full-length mock first, then read the gap in your weakest skill. IDP puts preparation at 2 to 4 weeks for test takers already at a high English level and close to their target band, and 2 to 3 months for intermediate and advanced learners. A wider gap needs 3 months or more.

Turn the gap into a booking date with the table below. The right-hand column is how far ahead to book, counting the preparation weeks plus the results wait. Measure the gap from a timed full-length mock, not from a practice set you paused halfway through.
